Charles Leclerc tops the time sheets in the first practice session
Charles Leclerc set the pace in his upgraded Ferrari during the first practice session of the 2024 Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola. The driver of the home favorite Ferrari, delighted the Italian crowd with a lap time of 1:16.990, placing himself at the top of the timesheets. Let’s take a look at what else happened in this free practice review.
Verstappen Struggled with Grip
Despite his dominant season so far, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen faced challenges on the Imola circuit. The championship leader could only manage the fifth fastest time, 0.250 seconds off Leclerc’s pace. Verstappen struggled with grip throughout the session, as evidenced by several off-track excursions at the Acque Minerali section. His teammate, Sergio PĂ©rez, fared slightly better, securing the fourth fastest time.
Hamilton’s Italian Return Marred by Spin
Lewis Hamilton, who will be racing for Ferrari next season, had an eventful session. In his first Italian Grand Prix since the announcement of his move, the seven-time world champion spun his Mercedes onto the grass at the same series of corners where Verstappen struggled. Despite the spin, he was able to continue and finished seventh on the timesheets, just behind Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda.
Early Red Flags and Midfield Battle
The session saw an interruption when Williams’ Alex Albon brought out the red flags. Albon’s car shut down after going over a kerb, and the team investigated the cause. McLaren’s Lando Norris, fresh off his first career win in Miami, secured eighth place. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, followed closely in ninth, with Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso rounding out the top ten.
Back With Bearman
British teenager Oliver Bearman made his mark by replacing Kevin Magnussen at Haas for this session. Bearman, who previously stood in for an unwell Carlos Sainz in Saudi Arabia, showcased his potential once again, adjusting quickly to the demands of the Imola circuit. Ultimately finishing the practice at 15th.
Looking Ahead
As the teams prepare for the next sessions, all eyes will be on whether Ferrari can maintain their home advantage and if Verstappen can overcome his grip issues to challenge for the top spot. The first practice was just the beginning of an exciting weekend at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Plenty of drama and competitive fight yet to come.
