2024 F1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix: Race Review

Max Verstappen hangs on to win ahead of Lando Norris at Imola

In a nail-biting finale at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Max Verstappen narrowly held off a charging Lando Norris to clinch victory by just 0.725 seconds, marking the smallest winning margin of the season so far. The tense battle saw Norris driving his McLaren to the absolute limit, closing in on Verstappen lap after lap but ultimately falling just short of securing a second consecutive win.

Early Race Dynamics

At the start, Verstappen, who was on pole, managed to maintain his lead into Turn 1 despite Norris gaining slightly when reacting to the lights. Norris, unable to capitalize on his advantageous position, was forced wide at turn 2 chicane. This allowed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to slot in behind the leaders, while Verstappen began to build a gap, eventually depriving Norris of DRS.

Mid-Race Strategy and Pit Stops

By lap 22, Verstappen had extended his lead to 6.5 seconds. Norris, initially dropping Leclerc in the first stint, found himself closing the gap once more. He was the first of the leaders to pit on lap 22, switching from medium to hard tyres. Verstappen followed suit two laps later, and Leclerc extended his stint until lap 25. This strategic move allowed Norris to gain some ground, pushing early in the second stint.

Verstappen started his final stint with a 5.6-second lead, which he managed to rebuild slightly despite not at the same rapid pace as earlier in the race. However, the dynamics shifted around lap 47 when Leclerc missed his braking point at turn 9, cutting the chicane. This mistake eased the pressure on Norris, allowing him to focus entirely on reeling in Verstappen.

The Final Laps

With just 20 laps remaining, Verstappen seemed poised for victory with a six-second advantage. However, Norris, finding a better rhythm on his hard tyres, began to cut into Verstappen’s lead, which started to plateau as the Dutchman struggled with fading grip. Norris’s relentless pace saw the gap shrink steadily, building up to a very tense close to the race.

As the race entered its final lap, Norris had reduced the gap to under a second. Despite his best efforts and a visibly superior grip, the lack of overtaking opportunities around the tight Imola circuit meant he couldn’t get close enough to utilize DRS effectively. Verstappen, aware of the narrowing margin, managed to fend off the McLaren driver to take the chequered flag.

Post-Race Reactions

Reflecting on the intense closing stages, Verstappen said:

“The last 10 laps were flat out and it’s very difficult when the tyres are not working anymore and you have to go flat out. I couldn’t afford to make too many mistakes — luckily we didn’t and super happy to win here today.”

Norris, while disappointed, acknowledged the effort:

“It hurts me to say, but one or two more laps and I think I would’ve had him.”

Other Performances

Charles Leclerc, despite a mid-race error, finished a solid third, 7.9 seconds behind Norris and 6.2 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. Carlos Sainz took fifth for Ferrari, ahead of the two Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Mercedes’ strategic pit stop for Russell to gain the extra fastest lap point towards the end secured their positions against Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who finished eighth. Lance Stroll claimed ninth for Aston Martin, while Yuki Tsunoda secured the final point for VCARB in tenth place at the teams home race.
