Cadillac F1 Team Announces Driver Line-Up for 2026

The landscape of Formula 1 is set to shift dramatically with the confirmation that Cadillac will join the grid in 2026 and the announcement of it’s ambitious driver pairing. Cadillac Formula 1 Team revealed that they have signed Sergio Pรฉrez and Valtteri Bottas to lead their debut campaign.

From the outset, the selection of Pรฉrez and Bottas feels less like an entry-level move and more like a statement of intent. Between them, the two drivers bring an impressive wealth of experience, over 500 Grand Prix starts, 100-plus podium finishes, and a combined 16 race victories.
For a team building from the ground up, under the banner of one of Americaโ€™s most iconic automotive brands, this pairing sends a message. Cadillac has its sights set on more than just surviving year one.

Pรฉrez, a six-time Grand Prix winner and the 2023 runner-up in the World Championship, arrives with both hunger and unfinished business. After parting ways with Red Bull Racing, he embraced this new chapter as an opportunity to redefine his legacy and contribute to something new. โ€œJoining the Cadillac Formula 1 Team is an incredibly exciting new chapter in my career,โ€ he stated. โ€œItโ€™s an honour to be part of building a team โ€ฆ we will fight at the very front.โ€

Bottas, meanwhile, is set to return to the grid after a year in a Mercedes reserve role, emphasizing that the Cadillac project appealed to him precisely because it represented a fresh start and a long-term vision. โ€œFrom the moment I began speaking with the Cadillac Formula 1 Team, I felt something different โ€“ something ambitious but also grounded,โ€ he commented.

What makes this announcement particularly intriguing is the context. Cadillac will debut as the sportโ€™s 11th team, backed by General Motors and operating out of hubs in Fishers, Indiana; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Silverstone, UK.

With the regulatory climate evolving and a new power-unit era on the horizon, Cadillacโ€™s choice to lean on experienced driving talent from day one reflects a strategy built around stability, development and long-term competitiveness rather than short-term hype.

Putting Pรฉrez and Bottas together also offers balance. Pรฉrezโ€™s recent top-end success and Bottasโ€™s pedigree as a constructors championship-level driver provide a complementary mix of leadership, feedback and race craft that will be crucial when the car hits the track.

That said, the announcement also raises some questions and highlights the challenge ahead. While the driver lineup is strong, the bigger question is whether Cadillacโ€™s infrastructure, power-unit strategy and resource deployment will match the ambition of its personnel. Cadillac will initially use Ferrari power-units until GM develops its own for use around 2029.

This transitional phase could define whether the team is able to avoid the struggles typical of new entrants, or whether they fall prey to the rookie pitfalls of integration, logistics and technical catch-up.

From a sporting dynamics perspective, Pรฉrez and Bottas will carry dual roles: not only to extract results on track, but to shape the team culture, mentor younger engineers, and embed performance baseline settings that will underpin future seasons. Their presence means Cadillac essentially flips a rookie driver dilemma on its head, they are veteran drivers joining a rookie-team. That inversion implies the team may prioritise steady progress and learning over immediate flash results, but the expectation of podiums or points may still rise quicker given the calibre of the drivers involved.

The timing blends nicely with Cadillacโ€™s broader goal to build a โ€œTeam of the Americas,โ€ using its brand and the expanding North American F1 audience. While some might have expected an American driver, the decision to lead with two international veterans speaks to the teamโ€™s global mindset. Pรฉrezโ€™s Mexican heritage further opens the door to strong ties in the Latin American market, a region increasingly important to Formula 1โ€™s growth.

Personally, Cadillac has a chance to have a solid first season with this lineup pairing. Based on the drivers alone, they could be a middle of the pack team fighting for points with the occasional 10-4 range finish. This team could surprise but it will largely come down to the development of the car. Which for a rookie team, that will be the biggest challenge.

The true measure of this lineup will come down to the first on-track outings, pre-season testing and how quickly Cadillac can convert potential into performance. For Pรฉrez and Bottas, this is more than a comeback, itโ€™s a foundational chapter in a venture that may define their legacies as much as their earlier successes. For Cadillac, the success of the launch may hinge on how well they capitalise on the experience, feedback and leadership those drivers bring. If Cadillac can translate this strong driver lineup into competitive performance, they may accelerate the next wave of American influence in Formula 1.
