Race Review: 2025 F1 British Grand Prix

The 2025 F1 British Grand Prix delivered a rain-soaked thriller at Silverstone. Lando Norris claimed an emotional maiden home victory after teammate Oscar Piastri received a penalty for a controversial safety car infringement. The race was a rollercoaster of drama, strategy gambles, and heartbreak. It all culminated in Nico Hülkenberg’s long awaited first F1 podium in his 239th Grand Prix start. Max Verstappen could do no better than fifth.

Piastri’s Penalty Decides the Race

The race was defined by a pivotal moment involving the two McLaren drivers. Oscar Piastri, who had brilliantly passed Max Verstappen for the lead on Lap 8 in the wet, was later handed a 10-second penalty for erratic driving under the safety car. The Australian appeared to brake aggressively on the Hangar Straight, forcing Verstappen to take evasive action. The penalty proved decisive. When Piastri served it during his final pit stop, Norris, who had inherited second after Verstappen spun at the restart, assumed the lead and never looked back. Despite Piastri’s late charge and a frustrated radio plea to his team, McLaren held firm. That allowed Norris to take the chequered flag by six seconds. Norris’ win was an emotional one as it was his first victory at his home race in Silverstone. The win also marked the British drivers fourth of the season and moved him now only eight points behind his McLaren teammate in the drivers championship standings.

Norris was elated after his home win.

“It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess.” – “Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it.”

“This is where it all started for me, and now thankfully I’ve been able to have my go.”

Piastri, furious post-race, bit his tongue but hinted at unfair stewarding, especially after George Russell escaped punishment for a similar incident in Canada.

“I’m not going to say much. I’ll get myself in trouble. Well done to Nico. I think that’s the highlight of the day. – “Apparently you can’t brake behind the safety car any more. I did it for five laps before that.”

Hulkenberg’s Fairytale Podium

While the McLaren battle dominated headlines, the feel-good story of the day belonged to Nico Hulkenberg who delivered a third place podium finish in his 239-race career . The veteran German, who had previously held the unwanted record for most F1 starts without a podium, delivered a masterclass strategy in mixed conditions. A perfectly timed switch to fresh intermediates just before a safety car period vaulted him into contention. In the closing stages, he held off a charging Lewis Hamilton to secure third.

Hulkenburg had this to say after his long awaited podium.

“It’s been a long time coming, hasn’t it? But I always knew we have it in us, I have it in me, somewhere.”

“What a race. Coming from virtually last, doing it all over again from last weekend. It’s pretty surreal, to be honest. I’m not sure how it all happened, but obviously crazy, mixed conditions.”

Verstappen’s Championship Hopes Fade Further

Max Verstappen’s title defense took another hit. After retiring from the Austrian GP the week before, the Dutchman struggled in the wet, spinning at the safety car restart and dropping to 10th. He fought back to fifth but now sits a daunting 69 points behind Piastri in the standings.

Hamilton’s Silverstone Streak Ends

Lewis Hamilton, who had stood on the British GP podium every year since 2014, had to settle for fourth after a valiant effort. The Ferrari driver closed in on Hulkenberg late on but couldn’t find a way past.

Midfield Battles

Pierre Gasly of Alpine and Lance Stroll of Aston Martin engaged in a fierce duel for sixth, with Gasly prevailing. Alex Albon secured a strong eighth for Williams, while Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin and George Russell of Mercedes rounded out the top ten.
